New tech helps students complete old lesson humanely

Seventh-grade life science students at Davidson Middle School recently participated in a dissection lab of a different kind. The frogs used were not the traditional cadaver frogs raised and then harvested for educational purposes. They were SynFrogs, hyper-realistic synthetic frogs mimicking real frogs in size and texture designed to replace cadaver frogs, allowing students to have a realistic, yet humane learning experience.

County to begin mosquito spraying soon

Okaloosa County will begin spraying for mosquitos in the coming weeks. Mosquito spraying is conducted in the evening and is required by state law and the county has released its schedule for the upcoming sprays. Spraying will begin one hour before sunset Mondays through Thursdays at the following locations in the north part of the county:

Keeping Crestview beautiful

The City of Crestview’s third annual Keep Crestview Beautiful kicked off last week and runs through April 26. The two-week event is designed to encourage the residents to help clean up the community with large dumpsters set up around the city to make sure the trash is properly disposed of. Keep Crestview Beautiful kicked off April 12 with dozens of city employees volunteering to help clean up two properties that had fallen out of compliance with city code.

FPL invites nearby residents to learn about proposed solar center

Neighbors who live near the site of a new proposed solar energy center recently got their first good look at the possible project. A new Florida Power & Light solar energy center which would be located a few miles west of Crestview and just south of Interstate 10 is in the early permitting stages. FPL representatives invited the nearby neighbors to an open house on April 6 to discuss the project.

The North Okaloosa Fire District’s new fire engine at Bob Sikes Airport looks like it belongs in an episode of Star Trek more than a local fire station. The department received its new crash rescue truck, a specialized fire engine designed to meet the needs at an airport, last month. The roughly $1.3 million truck was delivered to the North Okaloosa Fire District’s main station on Bob Sikes Airport on March 22.

Community receives life-saving overdose training

Several Crestview residents recently received a crash course in how to respond to someone going through an overdose to save their life. The City of Crestview partnered with Okaloosa EMS in putting together a training seminar for administering Narcan, the over-the-counter naloxone nasal spray designed to get a person breathing again quickly following an overdose.

3rd annual Keep Crestview Beautiful initiative begins April 12

The City of Crestview recently announced the third annual Keep Crestview Beautiful clean-up initiative will run from April 12 to April 26. As with previous years, the city will provide manned dumpsters around the city for citizens to use for free. The city will also have volunteer opportunities for community members to join city staff in the clean-up effort.

City schedules seminars dedicated to overdose treatment

A scary incident at a local church that was feeding the homeless when a man overdosed has inspired an upcoming training seminar on how to respond to an overdose situation led by Okaloosa County EMS. “The person who was rendering aid was interfered with by the crowd,” said Crestview Mayor JB Whitten, who is working with Okaloosa EMS to organize the upcoming seminar. “It really, really shook her up.
