City schedules seminars dedicated to overdose treatment

A scary incident at a local church that was feeding the homeless when a man overdosed has inspired an upcoming training seminar on how to respond to an overdose situation led by Okaloosa County EMS. “The person who was rendering aid was interfered with by the crowd,” said Crestview Mayor JB Whitten, who is working with Okaloosa EMS to organize the upcoming seminar. “It really, really shook her up.

Eight local children receive vision aid from White-Wilson

Local families gathered at White-Wilson Medical Center March 15 for a vision clinic during which eight children with severe visual impairments received Electronic Video Magnifiers (EVMs) funded by The White-Wilson Community Foundation (WWCF) in collaboration with Sight Savers America (SSA). The high-tech equipment allows the children to see more clearly what they have not been able to before. The vision clinic was made possible through a $15,670 grant from the WWCF and partnership with SSA, a nationally expanding nonprofit organization that offers free assistive technology for qualifying children.

Homeschoolers meet WWII Living History Corps

Ryder and Tucker came prepared for their homeschool group’s encounter with the Crestview Living History Corps. The boys wore their own helmets, and Ryder had his knapsack on his back. You never know when Sarge might call a hike! It’s not often students can walk right up to a World War II soldier or nurse and ask about their uniforms, equipment or role in the war. But on Feb. 23, elementary to high school members of the NWF Share homeschool coalition got to do just that at the Crestview History Museum.

Classic car being raffled to raise money for school district

The Okaloosa County School District is raising money for different schools’ sports teams, clubs and student organizations while giving the public an opportunity to drive home with a 1956 Chevrolet Belaire.

Community advocate Larry Kline, who has donated antique vehicles to local nonprofits for fundraising opportunities, has donated a 1956 Chevrolet Belaire to the school district.

Shining a light on crime

The Crestview community has united once again to shine a light on crime and come together as one, while also getting a little bit of exercise. The fourth annual Unity Flashlight Walk took place the evening of Feb. 25. The event was started by Crestview Police Chief Stephen McCosker, who joined the department in 2019.

Cub Scouts show off new track at Derby

The Cub Scouts of Pack 799 designed derby cars and constructed a new track for their annual derby. The annual Pinewood Derby was held on Feb. 18 at the First United Methodist Church. The scouts with the fastest cars will go on to represent their pack at other levels of competition against other packs.

Crestview hosts first Mardi Gras event

The Crestview History Museum was open to the community on Feb. 11 to celebrate the colorful and bustling culture of the Mardi Gras holiday. According to Brian Hughes, cultural service specialist for the city, this was the first time Crestview had hosted an event dedicated to the holiday.
