After two months of putting in the hard work associated with conditioning, football teams across the state can celebrate having crossed the summer finish line.

Football coaches and their teams can now turn their concentration to playing football. The official state-mandated start of fall camp was July 29.

Crestview High School has produced some talented outside linebackers and defensive ends in the last several years. 

History was made earlier this month when Andrica Durm-Williams, better known as “Coach D” to her players, was named the Crestview Lady Bulldog head basketball coach. Durm-Williams, who had served as the interim head coach, is the first African American woman to lead the team.

In years past when heavy rain soaked the football practice field at Baker, the Gators would either workout in the gym, lift weights in the fieldhouse or perhaps run on the track at Doug Griffith Memorial Stadium.

It is a bit cliché but Crestview junior outside linebacker Max Anderson is proof that it’s not the size of the Bulldog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the Bulldog.

Every coach looks for athletes that are bigger, stronger and faster and better conditioned than the opposition.

First-year Lady Bulldog basketball coach Andrica Durm-Williams is no exception. And she knows it’s rare to find a naturally gifted athlete.

Layne Brewer looks much bigger than the 185 or 190 pounds he weighs. And he plays much bigger than that, having spent countless hours developing his strength as one of the top lifters on the Gator weightlifting team.

Crestview baseball coach Tim Gillis has seen more baseball games than most people can fathom. The longtime Bulldog coach played baseball at Crestview High, earned the right to play in college and had several years in the minor leagues as a member of the Atlanta Braves organization.

Last season, Manwell Robinson burst onto the scene as a freshman running back for Crestview after injuries sidelined seniors Lazarius Parks and Jaden Appleby.  

They are the unsung heroes who are often referred to as grunts or “Big Uglies.” These men embody the definition of team players.  

They are the men that anchor the offensive line.
