The state Public Service Commission has approved a plan that will provide a break to Florida Power & Light customers because of lower-than-expected natural gas prices.
The plan, which the commission unanimously supported without discussion, will reduce customers’ monthly bills starting in May — and partially offset increases that took effect in April.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed a measure that will allow Floridians to carry guns without concealed-weapons licenses.
The Republican-controlled Senate gave final approval to the measure (HB 543) on Thursday, about a week after the House passed it.

The City of Crestview recently announced the third annual Keep Crestview Beautiful clean-up initiative will run from April 12 to April 26.
As with previous years, the city will provide manned dumpsters around the city for citizens to use for free. The city will also have volunteer opportunities for community members to join city staff in the clean-up effort.

A Crestview man is fine after being missing for about four hours after his boat capsized during a recent trip on the Shoal River.
Daniel Hunter was test driving a boat he had been working on along the Shoal River Tuesday, March 28, when the boat ran out of gas. The current in the river was strong because of recent rains, pulling his boat toward a downed tree as he was refueling it. Hunter thought the tree would just stop the boat until he was done refueling it, but instead the combination of the tree and the strong currents were enough to pull the boat underwater.

Escambia County commissioners said Thursday they might support a smaller medical examiner’s facility but didn’t rule out continuing to use the existing facility in Pensacola if they can’t reach an agreement with their counterparts in Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton counties.

Solid waste collection has been a frequent topic in the City of Crestview recently, with several complaints against the city’s current contractor Waste Pro.

The discussions are expected to continue as the city has started the process of finding its next solid waste collection and disposal services vendor.

The 2023 legislative session in Tallahassee began March 7.

The City of Crestview played a little catchup last week at the City Council meeting.
“Crestview High School has a recognition program,” said Crestview Mayor JB Whitten. “They have a student of the month that they recognize and we just kind of got a little bit late to the picture, and so we wanted to recognize our students also so we’re going to catch up.”

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Services will host a QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Workshop from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Citizens Moving Forward Event Center, 6151 Dogwood Drive in Milton, to help residents prevent suicide.
