The Crestview community has united once again to shine a light on crime and come together as one, while also getting a little bit of exercise. The fourth annual Unity Flashlight Walk took place the evening of Feb. 25. The event was started by Crestview Police Chief Stephen McCosker, who joined the department in 2019.

The Cub Scouts of Pack 799 designed derby cars and constructed a new track for their annual derby. The annual Pinewood Derby was held on Feb. 18 at the First United Methodist Church. The scouts with the fastest cars will go on to represent their pack at other levels of competition against other packs.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection recently announced that Okaloosa County will receive $600,000 to conduct a vulnerability assessment and create an adaptation plan. Okaloosa County will partner with its municipalities to evaluate and identify risks from flooding and sea level rise and develop an adaptation plan that prioritizes mitigation projects.

Growing concerns have been discussed throughout the community recently regarding the current trash service in the Crestview city limits. Those concerns had become so loud that Lloyd Childree, regional manager of Waste Pro, attended the recent City Council meeting to address those concerns with trash pickup in the area.

The more than 25,000 Floridians with recreational crab traps will soon have to make some changes. A new Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission regulation, which went into effect March 1, requires crab traps to have a rigid opening no larger than six-by-two inches. The purpose of this change is to help reduce the bycatch of diamondback terrapins in crab traps.

Doing some spring cleaning; culling the book, CD, Blu-ray and DVD collections; and replenishing those same libraries and treasures will benefit local high school students’ cultural travel to Crestview’s Sister City, as well as the Crestview History Museum. The museum’s Second Saturday opening on March 11 features a Bush House Market in the adjacent Wilson Street parking lot. It is organized by the Crestview Area Sister City Ambassadors student organization, which is raising funds for a June trip to Noirmoutier, France.
