HAM radios have been around for more than a century. Around the world amateur radio operators of all ages have communicated to those down the street or on another continent thousands of miles away.

Since 1978 the North Okaloosa Amateur Radio Club has been providing local citizens a place to go and grow their contacts and knowledge about radio.

For more than 30 years the Old Spanish Trail Rodeo has been entertaining cowboys and cowgirls as well as city folk that enjoy a different kind of sporting event.

Now in her eighth year as principal at Laurel Hill, Lee Martello easily recalls her proudest moment at the K-12 school nestled in the northwest corner of Okaloosa County.

At the end of a dead-end road in Holley, a small community just north of Navarre, the largest known collection of artifacts from the turpentine industry is kept in a tidy clay-colored building behind Raymond Melvin’s home.

Melvin, whose dad, granddads and great-granddads all trace their roots to the industry, started his collection when he was 22. More than 50 years later, it includes more than 1,000 items ranging from tools and scales to cut trees and cups to hold the sap.

Below Alabama was formed by four local men just over a year ago and had gigs for all but a few weekends in 2021. One place they don’t get to play very often? Crestview, where Leonard “Bubba” Ellis, who does vocals and guitar, said there are almost no live music opportunities.

The service hosts a vast and diverse collection of digital material including eBooks, films, music, comics and much more. Until now Hoopla had a borrow limit of five items per month per patron, but they have recently launched the BingePass feature.
