The Baker football team might have fallen short in its quest for another state championship, but the honors keep rolling in for Gator players.

Senior running back Kayleb Wagner and junior lineman Kurt Armstrong have been named Class 1A Rural All-State by FloridaHSfootball.com. In a fan vote, Wagner was named the classification’s Offensive Player of the Year collecting more than 17,000 votes.

It hasn’t been 100 years since the Baker School baseball team last appeared in the state playoffs. But it’s easy to see why it might feel that way.

The Gators made the playoffs three consecutive years between 2005 and 2007. The 2007 playoff appearance under Gary Taylor, who is now an assistant principal at Baker, was the last for the Gators.

The Crestview High School baseball team opened the 2023 season against Pine Forest in what could be considered a typical first game on Tuesday. There were plenty of mistakes to go around. There were plenty of good things too. The good outweighed the bad as the Bulldogs beat the Eagles 9-6.

Allison Baggett had two medals hanging from her neck early Saturday afternoon at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland. She came into the day at the 1A state meet hoping both would be for championships, but only her goal of repeating as a 119-pound Olympic division champ was achieved.

Madi Muse is a true competitor. She’s someone who is proud of what she’s accomplished, and yet, never entirely satisfied.  A pair of top medal-winning performances for the Crestview standout Saturday night at 3A state meet at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland are certainly a big deal, though there is always more that could have been done.

Crestview High School baseball coach Tim Gillis has been around the game for the better part of 50 years dating back to his days playing youth baseball here in Crestview. But he never tires of welcoming a new season when hope springs eternal.

One of the biggest boys weightlifting meets of the year took place at Baker School last week when the Gators hosted the Baker Invitational. The host Gators were joined by big school powerhouses Navarre, Pace, Milton, Crestview and Fort Walton Beach along with Walton, Jay and Pensacola Catholic.
