The aroma and sound of burgers sizzling on the grill welcome visitors as soon as they open the door to Crestview’s oldest restaurant. After being closed for a few years, first because of social-distancing rules stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and later because of a major repair/remodeling project, the 20-seat dining room at Coney Island, 107 N. Main St., recently reopened.

Planning, permitting and design tasks for a proposed Yellow River pedestrian footbridge that will benefit Florida National Scenic Trail hikers have received the green light.

Sturdy cedar closets are the only original interior items that endure at the historic Enzor House off U.S. Highway 90 and just west of downtown Crestview. The two-story, brick house, which stands on a lot that is zoned for low-intensity commercial use and is for sale, was built in 1928 for Dr. Olin Enzor.

Crestview primary care physician Dr. Abdul Mir, whose practice is known for its family-like atmosphere, is retiring after serving patients in the Hub City for 44 years.

Chipotle coming to Crestview

The Chipotle Mexican Grill being built at the Crestview Commons is scheduled to open sometime next spring, Chipotle spokeswoman Annie Gradinger said on Nov. 27.

She’s (still) got that swing

At age 75, Crestview musician Dorothy Burress is still helping set the tempo as a drummer. She currently plays in three bands, The Hashtag Swing Big Band, The Polka Dots German Band, and the North Okaloosa Community Band.

Starting Monday, Jan. 1, consumers can purchase qualifying back to school supplies exempt from tax during the 2023-2024 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday. Passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis, the sales tax holiday has two exemption periods, with the first occurring in July and August and the second occurring in January.

Three floors, as well as an original post office sales counter, were among the interesting finds made during the renovation of the historic building that began housing the Crestview Community Redevelopment Agency and Main Street Crestview Association offices this past June.

New murals turn heads in downtown Crestview

The newly completed mural on the north exterior brick wall of the Main Street Crestview Association/Crestview Community Redevelopment Agency office building is “just gorgeous,” MSCA Executive Director Deb Gething said. Featuring an image of a waving American flag and the words, “Thank you for choosing downtown Crestview,” the new mural was created by 2D artist Christina Donahoe, a Pittsburg native who currently lives in Fort Walton Beach.
