I was sad to hear of the passing of Don Salter. He was on the Santa Rosa Board of County Commissioners for twenty years and would be there now if he was re-elected in 2020.
He has contributed to the betterment of our county during his time on the commission.

A free press must prevail
In a rare event, law enforcement raided a local newsroom in Marion, Kansas, carrying out equipment, computers, cell phones and files.
They also raided the publisher’s and the owner’s home.

Out and About
Have you noticed that the Weather Channel has turned into the town crier touting that the end is near? I noticed recently that the Weather Channel started naming all the winter storms.
However, when I looked it up, they apparently decided to start naming winter storms in 2012. We used to just have named hurricanes but that wasn’t enough.

As the start of high school sports near so does the march to state championships.
Every team, in every fall sport that starts practice on July 31 and the other sports throughout the school year, should have the goal of a state championship.

Out and About
I’ve been mostly out this week and about in other parts of Florida. Sarasota to be specific.
We brought seven of us to the Florida Press Conference to learn the latest trends and best practices in journalism and design. We also had our awards ceremony, and while Navarre Press didn’t win the overall trophy for our division, Santa Rosa Press Gazette did.

Nation declines as government spending, inflation grow; incomes fall
Using statistics from the Department of Labor, The Wall Street Journal reports that real hourly wages during the Biden presidency have declined.
When Joe Biden took office in January 2021, the average hourly wage adjusted for inflation was $11.39. Now, 29 months later, it stands at $11.03, a 3.16% decline.

As a writer my life is filled with words. Sometimes I get caught up in the moment and use hyperbole that leads to getting my thoughts across using a word that has more punch than the event I describe merits.
I try not to make the mistake, but it happens and will continue to.

It is countdown time for me as another school year approaches. I’m not so much excited about the start of the school year on Aug. 10 as I am the start of another high school sports year.
Small children count down the days to Christmas. I count down the days until teams can officially hold a sanctioned fall practice on July 31.
