One of my favorite passages in the Bible is Isaiah 43:1-7. It says in part, The Lord says, “Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” (43:1).

With the start of a new year, I thought I’d do a little JIC (just in case) research. The JIC I mention is local teams or athletes making it to a state championship and the distance coaches, athletes, local media members and fans would have to travel to those championships.

There’s nothing like a new year to bring hope. As I look back on 2022, I have to say it was a very good year. The best part was the opportunity Sandi Kemp gave me to return to the News Bulletin to write sports as well as a few other things that have stretched my outlook on journalism and made me a better writer.

I can’t believe Christmas has arrived.  Where has the year gone?  As I reflect on this season of giving, marked by the greatest gift of all, the birth of Jesus, I want to renew a tradition I had when I was previously with the News Bulletin.

A recent kerfuffle over residents’ right to speak at a nearby county commission meeting got us thinking about public forums and their place in our representative democracy. It started when new Santa Rosa County Commission Chairman Colten Wright, at his very first meeting in charge, announced he was moving the public forum from the beginning of the meeting to the last spot on the agenda.

As I go to meetings and listen to meetings in Santa Rosa County and now Okaloosa County, I realize how valuable it is to know what is going on in two counties, not just one.
