Meet the owners

Dmitri and Victoria Guboglo are originally from Moldova, a small Eastern European Country where wallpaper is common in every home. They hope to bring those colors and patterns to the Emerald Coast.

They both bring in a rich culture of covering spaces with wallpaper.

Victoria comes from an accountant/CPA background and is excited to combine her business- minded work ethic and love for design. She sees so much potential in this area to transform homes.

Dmitri comes from a construction background. He has worked with his hands all his life. After establishing a local remodeling business in the United States in 2017, they decided to branch out and open the wallcovering showroom.

“Wallpaper makes your home comfortable and cozy. There is no need to hang pictures and paintings. The wall can be beautiful by itself, without all the extras,” Victoria said.

“The process of selection of the right finishes for your project is tedious and complicated. I just love to see the end result of all my projects,” Dmitri added.

Endless options G& G Pro Design offers thousands of different wallpaper designs, including paper from more than 30 different manufacturers from all over the world. They have everything you could think of to put on your wall.

From simple to sophisticated

“My bread and butter, my reputation, is getting in and getting a pool done,” said Mike Esmond, the owner of Gulf Breeze Pools and Spas. “One of the things you’ll always hear people say about Gulf Breeze Pools is they get the job done. They’re here every day.”

Mike runs the company from his cell phone and is always available.

“You can call me at 12 o’clock at night or 12 o’clock in the afternoon,” he said. “You can always get through to me 365 days a year. That’s the way I’ve always run it.”

Mike and his team get to work early and stay late to make sure the job gets done.

“You’ve just got to go with the flow. When you do this kind of work, there are things that you might start and if it rains, it delays you. We’ve been in customers backyards until midnight with lights because once you start shooting the structure of the pool with the gunite, which is concrete, you really can’t stop, you’ve got to keep on going,” he said.

Mike loves building pools. He wouldn’t do anything else.

“To me it’s a fun job. I’ve been doing it my whole life. I’ve only had two jobs in my life – United States Army and building pools,” Mike said chuckling.

Mike takes care of veterans because he is a veteran. The first job after high school was in the Army where he spent one year in Vietnam. After completing his Army service in 1968, he went to work for Sylvan pools in Doylestown Pennsylvania for 10 years building swimming pools in different countries around the world, such as Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Japan, the UK, and most of the states in the United States.

In 1977 he moved to Pensacola with his wife and three daughters, and since then has worked on the construction of over 5,000 pools in this area. In 2010 Mike started his own company, Gulf Breeze Pools & Spas, which has become a major leader in the area for swimming pools.

“I’ve always been building pools, and that’s why in 2010 at the young age of 63, I decided to go into business for myself after working all those years for somebody else.”

With over 50 years of experience and more than 6,500 pools built both nationally and internationally, Mike Esmond is well known and respected in the pool industry. Since 1977 Mike has been living and working in the Pensacola and Gulf Breeze communities. Committed to quality products and service, Mike is hands on. His love of the community along the Gulf Coast and excellent work ethic is the driving force of Gulf Breeze Pools & Spas.

Recognized by the Studer Group as a “Difference Maker in the Pensacola Area,” Mike is an active asset in the community. Mike loves to give back because he knows what it’s like to struggle financially.

“That’s how I got into paying bills for people. Back in the 80s I was struggling and I had trouble paying my bills and my gas was shut off in my house and I had no heat. And I happened to pick the coldest winter that Pensacola’s ever had, where it got down to 6 degrees and there was ice on the windows on the inside of the house. So, I’ve struggled and that’s why I got into helping people.”

For the past four years, Mike has paid all the past due bills for Gulf Breeze utilities – anyone whose power was about to get shut off.

“I thought, around Christmas time, people have to make a decision – do I want to pay bills or do I want to buy food or toys for the kids, so that’s why I decided to pay everybody’s past due bill.”

In total, Mike has paid over $100,000 in past due utility bills in the City of Gulf Breeze.

Growing herbs for the first time? UF/IFAS expert offers beginners tips to getting started

If you are inspired to grow your food for the first time this spring, you might consider starting with an herb garden, said Germán Sandoya Miranda, an assistant professor of plant breeding and genetics for the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).

While most of his work focuses on improving new lettuce varieties that can beat the heat of Florida’s subtropical climate and withstand pests and diseases, Sandoya Miranda is also a statewide extension specialist stationed at UF/IFAS Everglades Research and Education Center who offers beginning herb gardeners encouraging advice to get started.

“As you embark on this adventure, be patient at the beginning as you will need to do some research to accommodate your garden’s needs and your own expectations,” he said. “UF/IFAS Extension provides the best tools for beginners in Florida. No matter where you are, an extension agent in your county is always happy to help you.”

Florida offers the perfect climate for growing a variety of herbs year-round. Depending on the location and time of year, some herbs may flourish at certain times better than others. Early spring, however, is the ideal and most consistent time for planting herbs throughout the state. During the spring, soil temperatures are ideal, and the milder weather conditions mean seedlings won’t get battered by extreme heat or cold.

Some of the more common herbs for cooking — including basil, coriander, chives, dill and parsley — are among the ideal varieties to grow in the spring.

UF/IFAS recommends planting these herbs during Spring.

Sandoya Miranda offers these tips for novice herb gardeners ready to start their journey.

Consider when and where you are planting your herbs. Understand the location, amount of sunlight, soil and moisture conditions where you are planting your herbs. You can modify the planting locations by growing indoors with artificial lighting, heating or cooling aids.

Start out simple with some basic varieties.

Not sure what to grow? Look at research-based resources such as the UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions website, consult a variety catalog or gardening calendar publications such as those found on Ask IFAS for the herbs you are interested in growing.

Make sure you choose varieties adapted to the subtropical weather conditions in Florida. Whether you are planting in the southern, central or northern part of the state, weather conditions should be taken into consideration.

Familiarize yourself with the species of herb you are trying to grow. Some species may be more susceptible to diseases, and pests may be more abundantly present in the location you are attempting to grow your herbs. Specific plant species may require specific growing conditions.

Always use certified seeds, which are free of pathogens, to avoid disease development. For more information, refer to the UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions website or contact your local UF/IFAS Extension office agents for help.

If pests and diseases show up in your garden, consult an Extension agent specialized in insect pests or diseases. Refer to the Extension program directory to locate the agent in your county. Make sure not to apply any chemical pesticide at least 10 days prior to harvest.

Plant a variety of herbs. Some species vary in flowering time, colors and shapes. Make your herb garden a fun-to-watch spot. Enjoy the colors and aromas of your homegrown herbs, said Sandoya Miranda.

Looking for more resources? The Gardening Calendar publications on the UF/IFAS Solutions for Your Life website gives Florida gardeners a monthly guide for what to plant and do in their gardens and includes links to useful gardening websites, all based on University of Florida research and expertise. Three different editions of the calendar provide specific tips for each of Florida’s climate zones—North, Central, and South.

New user-friendly soil test kit to improve Florida landscapes

There are two ways to acquire a kit, with either option costing users $29.95 as an introductory special. The kit is ordinarily $31.95. Each UF/IFAS Extension office will be stocked with a limited quantity of kits at no upfront cost; users pay upon registering their kit.

It is suggested that residents contact their local office to inquire about the current stock levels. SoilKit.com/Florida will sell the kits online, and users pay no additional fees to send in their sample.

“The results users receive are not just tailored to their exact landscape, but it also takes into account their broader location, so that information like local fertilizer ban periods are accounted for,” said Bryan Unruh, UF/IFAS turfgrass scientist and Extension specialist. “We want Florida’s lawns and landscapes to thrive in a way that also protects our waterways and environment.”

In addition to the SoilKits available at local UF/IFAS Extension offices and the SoilKit website, the kits will soon be available at additional retailers.

Using the kit is simple and helped by the instructional video at turf.ifas.ufl.edu/soilkit. Users first register their kits at SoilKit.com, which helps target location-based requirements in addition to allowing the user to provide the needed contact information for receiving the results.

The next step is to collect the soil sample in the provided bag before sending it to the testing laboratory for analysis. After the lab receives the sample, results are returned via email within one to two business days.

“It is important that AgriTech partner with Florida scientists who specialize in the unique growing conditions of Florida,” said Christina Woerner McInnis, CEO of AgriTech Corp. “UF/IFAS Extension already reaches every corner of the state, and now we’re able to bring SoilKit and appropriate plant nutrition to the people who want to best care for their lawns and landscapes.”

Unruh, who is also associate director of the UF/IFAS West Florida Research and Education Center, sees another advantage to widespread participation in the new program: research.

“As we collect results for individual yards across the state, we are building a dataset of the soil conditions,” Unruh said, adding that user information will not be identifiable in the larger collection. “Users will receive UF/IFAS turfgrass science-backed information as we know it now, but as we go forward, artificial intelligence can help us target and improve recommendations based on factors like soil composition, age of landscape and climate.”

Portions of the kit’s proceeds are allocated to the UF/IFAS Turfgrass Science Program and the Florida-Friendly Landscaping Program to support graduate student education and in-service training of county Extension agents and program assistants.

October 2022 Home Show includes seminar on what to plant in fall

On Friday, October 21 at 3:30 p.m., I will provide a seminar titled Fall: North Florida’s Best Gardening Season. Fall should be our busiest gardening season in North Florida. It’s a more comfortable time to be outdoors. Many plants, such as strawberries and bulbing onions, only do well when planted during the cooler weather of fall. Fall planted trees and shrubs have a higher survival rate as compared to those planted in spring. Many nurseries have a better selection of trees during the cooler months. And, nurseries and garden centers could use your business this time of year.

Learn more about flowering annuals, perennials, bulbs, vegetables and herbs to plant during fall and why trees and shrubs are best planted in fall as well as what to do and not do in our lawns this time of year by attending this upcoming seminar. There will be time for questions following this seminar.

University of Florida Master Gardener Volunteers in Okaloosa County will staff a booth to help answer gardening questions throughout the entire Home Show.

The 2022 BIA Home Show hours are Friday 12 p.m.–5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

There is no cost to attend the Home Show and seminars are free.

Visit www.biaow.org for more info on the 2022 BIA Home Show.
