Bear – Wise – er

There is a bill on the Governor’s desk waiting to be signed. The state House gave final approval to a bill that would harden self-defense claims for people who kill bears on their property. The bill strictly spells out the restrictions of shooting a bear but does leave the door open for people who do. Summarily, the bill says people would not be penalized for killing bears if they “reasonably believed that his or her action was necessary to avoid an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to himself or herself or to another, an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to a pet or substantial damage to a dwelling.”
