Baker’s Epperly signs wrestling scholarship
It was at the college fair that Epperly, who was a part of girls wrestling program in West Virginia before moving to the area three years ago, found out there was the possibility that she could wrestle at the college level.
“I started talking to the coaches (at Huntingdon College) for softball,” she said. “And I start just talking to the teachers and they were softball, softball. And then after I went deeper into it and found out they had a wrestling team, that’s when I called the wrestling coach.
“We started talking more and more and then I showed my wrestling videos. That’s when the offered a scholarship,” Epperly added.
Epperly signed the scholarship in a ceremony at Baker School the week before Thanksgiving break. In doing so, she becomes the first athlete from Baker to sign a wrestling scholarship. And that makes sense as the school doesn’t offer male wrestling, much less wrestling for the female student athlete.
If Epperly had signed a scholarship for any other sport than wrestling there’s a good chance she would have several opportunities to hone her skills as a part of a local club or travel team. There might be a few opportunities for her male counterparts, but not so for a young woman.
That doesn’t mean Epperly, who is a member of the Lady Gator softball team, won’t be preparing for wrestling as she looks to enroll in the Montgomery, Ala., school next fall.
“I’m weightlifting competitively and I’m going to constantly stay lifting to get stronger,” she said. “And I have wrestling mats at the house so I can just workout on my own.”.
