Northwest Florida State College announces commencement speakers
Northwest Florida State College recently announced its 2023 Commencement Keynote speakers, Marcus Chambers and Russell Hughes. Northwest Florida State College will host two commencement ceremonies May 6, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Delivering remarks at the 10 a.m. ceremony will be Chambers, superintendent of the Okaloosa County School District.

New tech helps students complete old lesson humanely
Seventh-grade life science students at Davidson Middle School recently participated in a dissection lab of a different kind.
The frogs used were not the traditional cadaver frogs raised and then harvested for educational purposes. They were SynFrogs, hyper-realistic synthetic frogs mimicking real frogs in size and texture designed to replace cadaver frogs, allowing students to have a realistic, yet humane learning experience.

Catalytic converter theft bill heading to DeSantis
The House on Wednesday gave final approval to a bill aimed at curbing thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles. The House voted 105-2 to pass the bill (SB 306), which the Senate approved unanimously early this month.

County to begin mosquito spraying soon
Okaloosa County will begin spraying for mosquitos in the coming weeks.
Mosquito spraying is conducted in the evening and is required by state law and the county has released its schedule for the upcoming sprays. Spraying will begin one hour before sunset Mondays through Thursdays at the following locations in the north part of the county:

City clears property taken over by squatters
A lot can happen in a couple of days.
On March 27, a group of residents who lived around Shortwell Avenue attended the Crestview City Council meeting to discuss the deplorable living conditions in their neighborhood brought on by one problem residence where they owner had passed away and squatters had begun living there.

Keeping Crestview beautiful
The City of Crestview’s third annual Keep Crestview Beautiful kicked off last week and runs through April 26.
The two-week event is designed to encourage the residents to help clean up the community with large dumpsters set up around the city to make sure the trash is properly disposed of. Keep Crestview Beautiful kicked off April 12 with dozens of city employees volunteering to help clean up two properties that had fallen out of compliance with city code.
