FEMA, FCC plan nationwide emergency alert test for Oct. 4.
FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) at 1:20 p.m. (central time) Wednesday, Oct. 4.
The national test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. Both tests are scheduled to begin at approximately 1:20 p.m. CT/2:20 p.m. ET Wednesday, Oct. 4.

County Commission approves higher water/sewer rates
An amended water and sewer ordinance with a new and higher five-year rate plan was adopted by the Okaloosa County Commission on Sept. 19.
That means county water and sewer customers will see increases in their monthly water and sewer bills that are larger than the ones in the previous plan. The old plan provided for a 3% rate increase per year for five years, from Oct. 1, 2021 to Oct. 1, 2025.

County adopts FY ’24 budget
At its second and final public budget hearing on Sept. 19 in Shalimar, the Okaloosa County Commission adopted a countywide millage rate of 3.83 mills and an overall budget of more than $626 million for fiscal year 2024.
The new budget year starts on Oct. 1.

World-renowned operatic performer embraces his Crestview roots
Crestview native, all-around athlete, Grammy Award winner, world-renowned operatic performer and performing arts scholar Glenn “Donovan” Singletary Donovan will have an extra reason to celebrate his birthday on Oct. 23.
To honor Singletary’s many accomplishments, the Okaloosa County Commission on Sept. 19 approved a proclamation designating Oct. 23 as “Donovan Singletary Day” in Okaloosa County.
