COLLEGE OFFERS ALZHEIMER'S SUPPORT: A Florida State University program that offers relief – free of charge – to distressed African-Americans who provide care to a loved one with dementia. It uses trained lay pastoral-care facilitators and is recruiting caregivers in North and Central Florida. ACTS 2 (African-American Alzheimer’s Caregiver Training and Support) won a $20,000 award as well. Caregivers participate in a 12-session, telephone-based skills-building and support program covering topics such as relaxation, effective thinking and problem-solving skills. SHINE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders, a Department of Elder Affairs program, seeks volunteers to help elderly residents answer Medicare questions and resolve problems, help them make informed choices about their health insurance, save money on prescription medications and learn about their eligibility for helpful programs. EMERALD COAST HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS WANTED: ECH provides compassionate care through a team of professional staff members and volunteers. Volunteers are thoroughly trained and provided ongoing education. They can serve in a variety of areas from administrative help to offering support to a hospice patient through visits or weekly phone calls. Just a few hours a month makes an impact. Crestview Main Street Association receives national accreditation

The Crestview Main Street program is now nationally accredited. [FILE PHOTO | NEWS BULLETIN]

TALLAHASSEE — Main Street Crestview Association is among 32 Florida Main Street programs that have received national accreditation from the National Main Street Center for 2019. Secretary of State Laurel M. Lee released the list March 22.

The accreditation process is conducted each year based on a series of standards set by NMSC and its coordinating program partners. The designation signifies a local Main Street program’s commitment to community revitalization and engagement, and rigorous outcome measurement.

Lee said, “Florida’s Main Street programs are an essential tool for economic development and historic preservation in downtown districts across the state.”

COLLEGE OFFERS ALZHEIMER'S SUPPORT: A Florida State University program that offers relief – free of charge – to distressed African-Americans who provide care to a loved one with dementia. It uses trained lay pastoral-care facilitators and is recruiting caregivers in North and Central Florida. ACTS 2 (African-American Alzheimer’s Caregiver Training and Support) won a $20,000 award as well. Caregivers participate in a 12-session, telephone-based skills-building and support program covering topics such as relaxation, effective thinking and problem-solving skills. CRESTVIEW —Here is a list of upcoming events in our area.

PUP ADOPTION DAY: 1-3 p.m. March 16, Crestview Fire Department Station 3, 585 Brookmeade Drive, Crestview. The fire department will partner with Min Pins & Mutts K9 Rescue to find the puppies homes. A firefighter and pup photo shoot, door prizes and a few raffle items are scheduled to raise funds for the rescue organization. They will also accept donations of pet supplies and linens at the event.

UPCOMING

PUP ADOPTION DAY: 1-3 p.m. March 16, Crestview Fire Department Station 3, 585 Brookmeade Drive, Crestview. The fire department will partner with Min Pins & Mutts K9 Rescue to find the puppies homes. A firefighter and pup photo shoot, door prizes and a few raffle items are scheduled to raise funds for the rescue organization. They will also accept donations of pet supplies and linens at the event.

AZTECA ST. PATRICK'S DAY BASH: 9 p.m. March 16, Azteca Mexican Restaurant's back room, 789 Ferdon Blvd. N, Crestview. Includes live music by Healing Crow band. Age 21 and up. No cover charge. Drink specials include $3 drafts and $6 wells, $12 all-you-can-drink "Rocks" margaritas.

LAW LIBRARY BOARD MEETING: A meeting of the Law Library Board of Trustees is 1 p.m. March 20. This is a public meeting and will be held in the Chambers of Judge Michael Flowers located at the Okaloosa County Courthouse, 101 James Lee Blvd. E, Room 268, Crestview. 

CPR CERTIFICATION COURSE: 8 a.m. to noon March 23, Crestview Fire Department, 321 W. Woodruff Ave. The fire department will teach an American Heart Association CPR and defibrillator BLS Provider certification course, valid for two years. Attendees must be age 14 and up. MOE'S CUSTOM GRAPHICS GRAND OPENING: 9 a.m. March 30, at 1092 Ferdon Blvd. N, Crestview. Includes a 10 a.m. ribbon cutting. The arts and crafts store makes all custom apparel for personal and business use, and sells vinyl, craft supplies and craft classes the second and fourth Saturdays.

COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR: 9 a.m. to noon June 1, Crestview Community Center, 1446 Commerce Drive. The Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce event includes free health and wellness screenings, health education and demonstrations; door prizes, family entertainment and a snack bar. Main Street Crestview calendar includes Triple B, strawberry festival

CRESTVIEW — The Main Street Crestview Association is hosting various events this year.

● Triple B BBQ Cookoff, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., March 23, Main Street, Crestview.

The event returns to downtown Crestview and will feature live performances by such artists as Bryan Bludworth, Jordan Ballentyne and Chauncy Crandall. Vendors may register at the MSCA website.

● Arts & Crafts Strawberry Festival, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 13, Main Street, Crestview.

Registration is open for craft (hand made only) and food vendors. Booth spaces are 10 feet square.

● Military Appreciation Day, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 4, Main Street, Crestview.

A 7K fun run begins at 8 a.m., and the appreciation event starts at 10 a.m. fire departments, law enforcement agencies, Life Flight organizers and so many others countywide will be present as well.

Event sponsorships are available through the MSCA website.

● Fall Festival 2019, 1-6 p.m. Oct. 26, Main Street, Crestview.

The free event consists of vendor booths with activities and games for attendees. It includes a popular costume contests for humans and pets, as well as a pet parade at 2 p.m.

● The Veterans Day Parade and Memorial Service are set for Nov. 11. Further information will be available at a later date.

● The annual Christmas parade is scheduled Dec. 7 in Crestview. Further details will be available at a later date.
