NFL’s Ulysees Gilbert III pays off 60 layaways in Ocala

Sheila Plumley gets a picture with NFL linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III on Monday. Plumley’s sister, Sherita Graham, had a layaway of nearly $500 paid off by Gilbert on Monday. [Submitted photo]

Sherita Graham received a phone call from the Burlington Coat Factory store manager over the weekend, asking if Graham could stop by the store on Monday.

Graham was concerned. She had nearly $500 worth of her grandchildren’s presents on layaway at Burlington. She wasn’t sure how she would pay the layaway off before Christmas.

Graham decided to go to the store early on Monday to beat a rain storm that was approaching. When she got inside, she met Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III, who played football for Trinity Catholic High School and the University of Akron before he was drafted into the NFL last spring.

That’s when Graham learned that Gilbert had paid for 60 layaways at the store, located in the Shady Oaks Shopping Center.

“I thought I was going to pass out,” said Graham, 55. She said it was the kindest gesture she has ever received.

The day before his appearance in Ocala, Gilbert retweeted a tweet about Brooklyn Nets shooting guard Joe Harris, who had paid off layaways at another Burlington Coat Factory.

Gilbert has yet to mention his own good deed. Gilbert had partnered with the nonprofit “Pay Away the Layaway” foundation, according to Burlington officials.

Though it has been reported by some of Monday’s recipients that more than $15,000 worth of layaways were paid off in Ocala on Monday, store officials say they can’t disclose the total amount.

Mark Shipman, the Ocala store manager, said Monday’s event was special.

“He (Gilbert) is a good person,” Shipman said. “You could tell he was doing it for the right reasons, out of the kindness from his heart.”

The “Pay Away the Layaway” nonprofit was launched in 2011. The group raises funds all year to pay off layaways for children at stores “like Kmart, Burlington, Walmart, Navy Exchange, and the Army & Air Force Exchange during back-to-school and the holidays,” the agency website states.

On Facebook, Graham’s sister, Sheila Plumley, marked the occasion with a photo of her and Gilbert at Burlington.

Plumley said Gilbert was the nicest person ever and did a wonderful thing for so many people.

Also on Facebook, Graham called Gilbert “a very nice young man.”

She added that Gilbert’s mother, who also attended the event, was a very nice lady.

“I must have hugged him about 50 times,” she wrote.

Crestview’s Kilburg skates to World Cup bronze

NAGANO, Japan — Team USA started the first day of Long Track World Cup 4 with a silver and bronze in the Mass Start events.

Olympic medalist Mia Kilburg of Crestview skated to her first world cup medal as she crossed the finish line in third place during the Ladies Mass Start. Olympian and World Champion Joey Mantia of Ocala won his second world cup Mass Start medal of the season, finishing in the second position.

"I feel like a complete rookie again," Mantia said. "I wasn't paying attention to (Jordan) Belchos and had no idea when I went for the sprint that he was in the lead off the front of the pack. When I crossed the line, I put my hands up because I thought I won and realized quickly the mistake I made. Can't help but laugh and congratulate Jordan on a nice race."

"I crossed the line as if I won the race," Kilburg said. "I couldn't be more excited. The race went just as I hoped. I got stuck for a second behind a crash on the last lap but was able to avoid it and skate to my first World Cup medal!"

3 killed in Columbia County crash Wednesday evening

[File]

Three people died following a four-car collision on U.S. 441 in Columbia County Wednesday evening.

The crash took place on U.S. 441 near Southwest Winchester Glen at about 6:30 p.m., according to a Florida Highway Patrol press release.

Jerry Harrell, 73, of Hawthorne; Stanley Herman, 88, of High Springs; and Edie Herman, 86, also of High Springs, died as a result of the accident, which involved a head-on collision.

Harrell was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer south on U.S. 441 when he struck a slower-moving vehicle in front of him, the release said.

The second vehicle, a 2005 Chevy Silverado driven by Robert Clemons, 37, of Fort White, then traveled into an opposite lane, where it collided head-on with a 2016 Kia Soul driven by Stanley Herman. Edie Herman was a passenger in the Kia.

A 2001 Ford F-250 truck traveling north behind the Kia and driven by James Stokes Jr., 28, of High Springs, hit the right side of the Kia, the release said.

Clemons and Stokes sustained minor injuries in the crash, troopers said.

KNIE: Grief seminar for children scheduled

Emily Knie

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Or so says a particular song, anyway.

For most people, the holidays are filled with laughter and cheer. However, for some, it can be an impossible hurdle due to the loss of loved ones. For these folks, it’s difficult to even move through the motions of mirth, much less muster up the strength to face the memories.

Crestview Public Library will be hosting Covenant Care’s “Grief and the Holidays” workshop 4:30 p.m. Dec. 17 at 1445 Commerce Drive, Crestview.

This program is open to children of all ages and their parents/caregivers desiring to honor their lost loved ones. This program will feature a therapy pony, dinner, a story about grief, cookie decorating, a remembrance ornament, and a snowball fight.

To register, call or email Monica Koetters by Dec. 13 at the latest at 850-384-7778 or campconnect@choosecovenant.org.

As author Julia Cook says, “Grief is like a snowflake as its unique, sometimes comes one flake at a time & other times comes like a blizzard. It melts away, but it always come back. Just as each snowflake is unique, each person experiences grief in their own unique way.”

Emily Knie is the Crestview Public Library’s adult services librarian and interim assistant director.
