Love is in the air

Janice Lynn Crose, a former accountant, lives in Crestview with her husband, Jim; her two rescue collies, Shane and Jasmine; and two cats, Kathryn and Prince Valiant.

Love is in the air. The birds, squirrels and other animals are showing affection for each other as spring is just around the corner. They are so cute to watch in the backyard.

And everywhere one shops, there are multiple displays for Valentine's Day; there are Valentine cards, candy, toys, mugs and huggable stuffed animals.

I think Valentine's Day is a fun day, one in which we can all participate, no matter our age.

I have put up a front-door plaque that says "Love" and begun sending Valentine cards to friends and family. I hope these cards brighten someone's day. Our local post office has some nice love stamps, which add to the festive look.

For those of you in relationships, do you share a particular song or movie with your spouse or significant other? Jim, my husband, picked out George and Ira Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me" when we were dating. I would have undoubtedly picked an Andrew Lloyd Webber or Disney piece, but I like this one. We share a love for music as well as our love for each other.

Do you have special plans for Valentine's Day? Are you cooking a special meal for your family? Are you and your sweetheart going out for a special dinner, or are you going out to dinner with friends? We have several restaurants here in Crestview that would make a delightful dinner for Valentine's Day, whether it is a romantic dinner for two, dinner among friends or for the family.

Some restaurants will have a special menu, and you will need to make reservations. We have quite a variety of eating establishments here in town, so pick your favorite.

Don't forget a yummy Valentine treat for your dog or cat, or a new toy. And kids love all sorts of things — such as stickers, glow sticks, necklaces and puzzles. One doesn't need to spend a lot of money to make Valentine's Day special and share our love with one another.

The author of love is God. I John 4:7 states, "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God." Happy Valentine's Day!

Lock America's doors — and please knock politely

I was about 4 or 5 years old when I remember my mother locking the front door. She said something to my dad about people "out and about" on the road we lived on in the country.

Our community was safe but occasionally we heard about somebody wandering around who sounded creepy. She and dad determined it was time to lock the doors of our house.

Today, many Americans lock their doors even in the daytime. No one wants to be surprised by someone suddenly appearing in the house. If someone comes by our residence, they can call ahead and make an appointment or politely knock as respecting, humane people do.

People who desire to enter America must come respectfully and legally. We don't owe people from other countries entrance into America. People do not have a God-granted right to enter our country to be housed, educated and fed. I realize that the work of churches and non-profits is helping and healing the hurts of humanity, but America is not a church. We used to be a Christian nation but about half of America no longer wants that label.

People from any country must come with passports, visas and fill out all the required documentation when entering our country. Be prepared to answer questions. It's a different world and we need to know as much about them as possible.

Almost every day or week brings more and more people to our country who want to immediately have everything that Americans have. That's not possible. People from Syria and other war-torn, ravaged lands cannot come here and expect to immediately have everything that Americans have worked 30 years or more to achieve. America is not responsible for granting to the rest of the world the American dream status as soon as they parade into our nation. Our forefathers came legally and worked hard to achieve the American dream. It took time.

Most of us are happy to welcome people from the world if they knock on our doors, identify who they are and fill out the required documentation. We don't want people who hate, resent and want to hurt us. We have to be honest and know that a lot of the world hated America long before President Donald Trump. Securing our borders, asking questions of those who want to enter in order to be safer is the right thing to do.

Thousands have been flooding our country.  It's only smart to lock the doors. It's tough on some people. It will be much tougher if we make a mistake that leads to someone entering our country and inflicting carnage on our people. Obviously, we have people already living here who are capable of carrying out something horrendous. Someone can be born and raised here and still hurt people. However, taking some precautions to try to head off any potential problems is prudent.

May God give our president wisdom and may we as Americans please try to calm down and work together during these difficult times.

Furthermore, never enter my house without me opening the door and inviting you.

Obama’s claim that he ‘saved the U.S. economy’ is demonstrably untrue

File Photo

In search of any plausible, positive legacy item — even if they have to manufacture it — Democrats have advanced the false narrative that President Obama “saved the economy.”

It would be a neat thing if it were true.

Let me parse out the facts of this spin, echoed by the media and academia, as it relates to Obama's self-proclaimed "top" legacy item.

We are supposed to believe that the community organizer, with zero business experience, led us out of a recession and kept us from a “great depression” with his financial savvy.

Two very inconvenient truths refute this.

First, the economy officially came out of recession in June 2009, about the time members of the Obama administration had just completed their confirmations and about had all their boxes unpacked in the West Wing.

Second, they did nothing that the Bush administration had not already set in motion to right the economy. This included, if you believe they all worked (and I do not), TARP, bank and GM bailouts, quantitative easing, federal backstopping of some investment products, and finally some $750-odd billion in “stimulus” money.

In short, our government threw a lot of our money at a financial crisis it helped to create with the Community Reinvestment Act, which decreed that anyone who could fog a mirror or fill out fake bank loan paperwork could get a subprime home loan. Like all economic excesses, the markets corrected it and punished financially the bad actors who participated.

To prolong the middle-class misery, the Obama administration added mountains of job-killing regulations. And if the Community Reinvestment Act had not done enough damage, Obama let lefty Elizabeth Warren start the expensive Consumer Protection Agency. It proclaimed it would force lenders to make more "fair" loans to folks with bad credit and would not allow them to charge interest high enough to offset the risk. Sound familiar? I called the agency the "Department of the Cause of the Next Recession."

Using his infamous motto, “Never Let a Good Crisis go to Waste,” Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and his boss set about playing the blame game and using money the federal government was throwing around with those not-so-shovel-ready jobs to shore up their political base. I don't know about you, but I know of no federal project in the area I live in that came from that political boondoggle.

Once passed, Obama had the checkbook of stimulus money, often called the "Porkulus Bill." In the important swing state of Wisconsin, in fact, 80 percent of “stimulus” money from the Obama administration went to public sector unions, the ones whose members had job security and who showed up at his mid-day political rallies in any T-shirt they were told to wear.

Waste was everywhere. The DHS sent $30 million to Medicaid recipients who were dead. These dead people were important to Democrats, as they represented a large voting bloc in the 2016 presidential race.

The key thing to remember is that the USA has a recession every five or six years, and we always recover. In our history, we have survived about 50 recessions, a couple of depressions, and numerous boy bands. Coming out of that recession would have happened no matter who was president. Taking credit for it is like taking credit for sunshine after a two-day rain.

In fact, depending on how you interpret pre-Depression economic numbers, the recession Obama came in on in its last few months was not even in the top 20 in our nation’s history. Peak-to-bottom GDP during this so-called “Great Recession” was only 5.1 percent. We tend to over-dramatize events that happen to us, but the USA has endured about 20 business slowdowns of over 15 percent from the Panic of 1785 until now. Americans were just less dramatic back then. Nowadays we panic when our free Internet is slow.

Obama did nothing but dampen the recovery by raising taxes and adding unnecessary regulations. He used the opportunity to make more people dependent on government welfare. His real “economic legacy” was doubling the U.S. debt from about $10 trillion to $20 trillion — with nothing to show for it.

The other big legacy item Obama claims is “killing Osama bin Laden.” He had, indeed, been president for two years when Navy SEALs found and killed Osama bin Laden.

After years of tracking him down, our government found bin Laden — in his house.

HUBBUB: Livestock fees; Barnes' legacy

(Special to the News Bulletin)

CRESTVIEW — Numerous crestviewbulletin.com and Facebook readers shared their thoughts on recent news reports.

Here are some of their comments.

LIVESTOCK FEES ARE ‘OUTRAGEOUS’

Ridiculous … and unnecessary! Government overreaching and fleecing the citizens! I’m retired military and examples like this are exactly why I bought 10 acres, zoned for agricultural use, way outside city limits!

City-folk never did seem to understand how to get along with each other without lawyers, ordinances, etc.

I might just have to start leasing out some space to folks who want to raise their own chickens but can't because of bureaucratic garbage like this. I'm sure we could negotiate a far cheaper option than those outrageous fees!

Phill Farrior

LIVESTOCK FOR EVERYONE

I recommend them for food on the table, as well as responsibility for kids to learn and earn! Definitely should be in everyone's back yard.

DR. BARNES NEVER GIVES UP

In reading about my friend, Dr. Naomi Barnes, I became a little emotional. She has always been the most hard-working individual that I have ever known. I met Dr. Barnes on the first day she entered the personnel office of the Okaloosa County School System. That meeting was an uplifting experience that I cannot forget.

Dr. Barnes never gives up on anything. I don't believe retirement is in her DNA. Continue doing what you do best.

A suggestion for health care reform

Janice Lynn Crose, a former accountant, lives in Crestview with her husband, Jim; her two rescue collies, Shane and Jasmine; and two cats, Kathryn and Prince Valiant.

I went to three different doctors in Crestview this week — what fun! What I found interesting while chatting with others is that most people hate their medical insurance, no matter which company insures them.

My husband, Jim, and I have an enormous deductible — $13,970 — and many of my prescriptions are minimally covered or excluded. Our prescription carrier decided that I should take the asthma inhaler they prefer, rather than what has been prescribed, although I have bad side effects with their preferred inhaler.

We have medical insurance, but health care is difficult because of costs associated with going to the doctor.

I think everyone would agree that we need medical insurance reform; however, we may not agree on how to accomplish it. I would love to see hospitals, doctors and pharmacies post their prices so that we patients, who are their consumers, know what an office visit or procedure costs. We can be better stewards of our money and our insurance when we know what we are expected to pay ahead of time.

If Hospital A charges $45,000 for a procedure and Hospital B charges $38,000, and they both are reputable with good doctors, the choice is clear. We don't deliberately buy groceries at an exaggerated cost, so why health care?

There are too many administrators and bureaucrats to the ratio of health care professionals, and their salaries have overwhelmed the cost of medical care.

The American Medical Association has gotten into this bureaucracy, even though less than 15 percent of doctors are now members.

"The AMA owns the coding system that every doctor in America is required to use in order to be reimbursed by insurance; it makes a stunning $72 million off the program every year,” Marion Mass, M.D., is quoted as saying on Philly.com. “It is in patient's best interests to reverse the trend of ever-increasing health insurance costs, but the AMA depends on the health-insurance industry for money.” (Source: http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/healthcare/Who-stands-for-patients-in-the-debate-over-health-care-cost-and-access.html)

Americans need help fast, Mr. President

The new medical insurance premium for my wife and I will be just a few dollars shy of $2,000 per month for 2017. This amounts to $24,000 for the year. Should either of us have a serious illness or medical procedure, our out-of-pocket expenses will be $11,000. Therefore, we could potentially be out $35,000 in medical expenses in one year. I hope we aren't, but the potential is always there.

Of course, that would be better than a $100,000 medical expense or being shoved into bankruptcy because of medical bills. It is easy to rack up several hundred thousand dollars in medical expenses.

President Trump appears to be moving fast on his promises. I hope he acts fast on affordable health care because it's killing me.

I continue to hear from people who have achieved Social Security disability status. They were declared disabled by a doctor and were eventually legally approved. This not only means a nice monthly check from Social Security but it means medical care provided by American taxpayers.

I'm for anybody who is truly disabled to have this help from the American taxpayers. Sadly, there are many reports of people who have obtained crooked attorneys with connections to crooked doctors who know a crooked judge who help them be approved for disabled Social Security. It's bad for America when people lie and fake an illness to get a disability check. Unfortunately, when the government is writing checks, multitudes line up to get their share, whether they deserve it or not.

If I live a few more years, I can apply for a full Social Security check and I will have Medicare. We will only have to pay for my wife's medical insurance for a little while and thus life will go on. The point is that most of us are feeling the pain of health insurance costs.

Mr. President, we need help — fast.

Hospitals and doctors have been gouging the government and insurance companies for a long time. For years, the government and insurance companies have paid it, but things are changing some. Insurance companies are no longer paying for everything or paying the full price they are being charged. One doctor recently told me that he has to bill the insurance company about three times more than he would normally charge a patient to just receive close to the amount he needs for a procedure.

While our new government leadership is supposedly working on a plan to fix medical care, they need to fix the rising cost of a college education. Too many college graduates are racking up $60,000 to over $100,000 in debt with horrendous interest rates being charged by some lending institutions.

Colleges know they have a gravy train. Thousands of students across the country who meet the conditions can receive $5,815 in government money paid directly to their college of choice. Colleges then tack on thousands of dollars more that families or the students often have to borrow. Colleges, in turn, build bigger buildings and incur more debt that in turn requires more and more tuition from struggling students and families.

Many federally funded colleges pay big salaries. One college president in Kentucky made about $400,000 a year at a tiny private Christian college. That's not that huge, as some presidents today make close to a million dollars a year. What is interesting is that his board of trustees promised him this same salary package upon his retirement for the rest of his life plus medical insurance, an apartment, a car and even his cell phone.

Where does this money come from? The money comes from federal grants that we the taxpayers pay — and from struggling students who rack up big debts so that a retired college president can receive almost $400,000 a year and additional perks for the rest of his life.

Sadly, many academic institutions are crumbling across this country. There are numerous cases of campuses closing and being sold to bigger institutions or closing altogether.

Average Americans can't handle what we are being handed in medical and college costs. We need help fast.

Why the Women's March helped Trump

File Photo

Liberals manufacture one thing well: pious outrage.

Hundreds of thousands of women took to the streets to protest President Trump before he even took office and could do anything to harm them.

Cities like San Francisco, New York, Portland and Washington D.C. host most of these showy displays of victimhood, both real and imagined. In fact, with high taxes and companies fleeing, most of these towns have become protest-based economies.

There were even demonstrations in Atlanta. Commuters were stuck on the roads of Atlanta for hours, and then the protests started.

What I did notice with the few women friends I know who flew to Washington to protest is that they have no idea what they are protesting. Mostly, they do it so they can bring up at a cocktail party that they went to Washington (carbon footprint and all) and marched. It becomes all about them, not any real or pressing issue. The education system and the media taught their self-important theatrics to them: Any protest, no matter the thoughtlessness of it, is a good protest.

The only march theme I heard was against “intolerance.” We are a very tolerant society, so maybe they are down to marching against lactose and latex intolerance.

Couple that with the revelations by James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas, and others, that many of these protests are fake, nefariously funded by leftist groups like the DNC and MoveOn.org. These are not grassroots efforts; they are “astro turf” movements, orchestrated for the eager legacy media cameras and knowing they will get ample time on the nightly news.

Thankfully, like the fable about the boy who cried "Wolf" so many times that no one paid attention to him when a real wolf appeared, these protesters elicit the same reaction.

These leftist ladies, who do not protest Sharia Law, flail at Trump and presuppose that he will enslave women, murder gays, take away reproductive rights, and tell women what they can wear.

I am not sure how loathing men and calling us pigs empower women. In watching Ashley Judd, Madonna and others use foul, hateful language toward Trump, I am surer than ever that the left “hates” the most. Trump just wants to take things that have not worked and do them a little differently. That is not hate; that is management.

Washed-up celebrities love these protests. Madonna incited a group of protesters by saying she thought of “blowing up” the White House.

The McCarthy-ism of liberals toward entertainment is quite hypocritical. They went out of their way to blackball any entertainer that performed at the Trump inaugural. Only the sweet Jackie Evancho, the 16-year-old who won “America’s Got Talent,” performed. The leftist Hollywood Mafia cannot wait to crush this little girl.

In reality, it helps Trump when weirdos are out protesting nothingness instead of meaningful issues like the Vietnam War, civil rights or women’s suffrage. It makes America realize why we elected Trump.

Yet the media, which serve as fluffers for left-wing causes, will show up at every protest, even if 10 anarchists are meeting for coffee. Keep in mind, Time Magazine named Trump “Person of the Year” and then spent the whole article explaining that they also once gave the "honor" to Hitler.

The key with Democrats is to keep their followers outraged so their lot in life never gets better and so they do not lose interest in protesting.

Pay attention to deceptive grocery packaging

“Look at the indentation on the bottom of some peanut butter jars,” Janice Lynn Crose says. “Although the jar is the same size, there are fewer ounces now.” Pixabay.com

We, as intelligent consumers, need to be on the alert for subtle ways that manufacturers inflate their prices. Many of us live on a budget and try to save money, and groceries play a large role in our monthly expenditures.

Jim, my husband, and I have noticed that the same package of cereal, chips or crackers that used to contain 28 ounces now has 24 ounces or less — at the same price. This is an example of inflation and the manufacturer thinking most consumers won't notice the change in the amount of food in the package.

Another culprit is jarred foods. Look at the indentation on the bottom of some peanut butter jars. Although the jar is the same size, there are fewer ounces now.

Have you also noticed that ice cream is now only a quart and a half instead of one half-gallon (two quarts) in most instances? In addition, smaller cartons of ice cream used to be 16 ounces and many are now 14. Carefully check the labels on your food items.

Go to the manufacturer's Facebook page and post a comment when you notice these tactics. You can also tell your store manager that you are unhappy with the manufacturer's sneakiness. Consumers understand that prices rise due to increases in wages, benefits, raw materials and transportation costs, but why play a game with us?

Don't hide smaller quantities in the same sized box.

Don't make huge indentations in jars.

Please be honest with us.

To be a wise consumer means to be aware. If you look at the labels on the shelves at most stores, the cost per ounce of a product is posted. This is an enlightening number and, many times, the store brand is less expensive than the national brand.

Watch your prices, though, because that is not always the case, especially if there is a sale.

Be aware of how you shop; pay attention to the price per ounce; and let the manufacturers know you are disturbed when they are dishonest with their packaging.

Please say hello if you see me around Crestview.

What it takes to 'Make America Great Again'

Like it not, Donald Trump is your president. Even if you claim he is not your president, he is. If you continue your citizenship in America, he is your president.

I heard and read reports of people who said they would leave the United States if Trump were elected president. How many have left or when are they leaving? Don't let the door hit you on the behind when you leave.

Actually, that's not the attitude to have. The correct attitude is, "Come on, people now; love one another," or something like that. I'm all for us loving and hugging each other but it doesn't seem to be on the horizon for our country.

I voted for Barack Obama the first time but I voted for Trump this time. One of the reasons I voted for Obama was because of health care and stem cell research. We must have stem cell research to find cures for numerous diseases. I was impacted greatly by health care with a very sick spouse for 12 years. I know the pain of a medical insurance crisis.

I also voted against Obama because he and Congress messed up health care so badly. I voted for Trump not necessarily because I am now a registered Republican but because we desperately need a new direction in this country. We have few jobs, a failing economy, failing infrastructure, growing poverty, tremendous despair and a nation run over by illegal immigrants. We also have a health care crisis.  Of all the candidates, I saw Trump as being in the best position to do some things to change our spiraling direction as a nation.

Congress members who pledged to not attend Trump's Inauguration were free to stay home. However, I hope that when their districts vote again they will let them stay home permanently.

How will they feel if Trump and a Republican-led Congress decide not to give additional money to their districts and refuse to work with them on any bills they might offer to Congress? I don't think that's the American way but sadly it has become the American way.

I'm not into an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth mentality. Slapping each other back and forth accomplishes nothing but uglier rancor.

What we all need to see are Democrats, Republicans and Independents crossing the aisle, shaking hands and working together to bring jobs back to America. Together they must work to save our infrastructure crisis.

Bring safe and clean water to America's communities. Infuse hope into our struggling military and elevate our beaten down veterans. Equal opportunities and equal rights for all can only happen if the people in Washington treat each other with equal respect. This means doing unto others the way they want to be treated.

Many people today are ready to join a movement. One movement we desperately need involves all people from all parties, all states, all colors, all nationalities reaching out to each other with a passion to work hard. These people have strong individual ideas but are determined to work together to solve our problems and make this country great again!

These people have strong individual ideas but are determined to work together to solve our problems and make this country great again!

9 things to expect on Inauguration Day

Janice Lynn Crose, a former accountant, lives in Crestview with her husband, Jim; her two rescue collies, Shane and Jasmine; and two cats, Kathryn and Prince Valiant.

The United States will swear in a new president on Jan. 20.

President-elect Donald J. Trump will be the 45th president of the United States, but this will be the 58th inauguration. Both the president-elect, as well as the vice president-elect will take the oath of office, which includes the words, "… will to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." The chief justice of the Supreme Court typically administers this oath.

According to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, these events will be held on Inauguration Day:

•A worship service

•A procession to the Capitol

•The vice president’s swearing-in ceremony

•The president's swearing-in ceremony

•The inaugural address

•Departure of outgoing President Barack Obama

•A U.S. Congress inaugural luncheon

•An inaugural parade

•An inaugural ball

Although we are far from the activities in Washington D.C., there will also be inaugural activities here in Okaloosa County.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5450 and co-host Thomas Wilken will present a gathering to watch the inauguration 11 a.m. Jan. 20 at 2420 W. James Lee Blvd., Crestview. Food and drink will be available for purchase and the public is welcome to attend and join the fun.

An inaugural luncheon is also scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 20 at Clemenza's in Uptown Station, 75 Eglin Parkway, Fort Walton Beach. Reservations are required for this buffet luncheon. The cost is $15 per person. Call 243-0707 to RSVP.

State Committeewoman Sandra Atkinson has organized two gatherings in the Oyster Shanty Bar at AJ's. The first one is to watch the inauguration ceremonies and the second one includes a live band. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Jan. 20 at 108 Santa Rosa Blvd., Okaloosa Island. There is a cover charge of $8 for each event. Food and drinks will be available to order.

You can also have your own gala at home. Invite friends over to watch the inauguration and have food and drinks while you enjoy the festivities.

Use the inaugural activities to teach your children or grandchildren about the United States Constitution, the election process, our representative form of government, the three branches of government and the separation of powers.

This is a historic day and a good teaching experience.
