At about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Crestview police officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of Lakeview Drive in reference to a female who had been shot several times in the legs and torso during a domestic altercation, police said today in a news release.
When officers arrived at the residence, emergency first aid was provided to the victim until the Crestview Fire Department and Okaloosa County EMS arrived on scene to transport her to an awaiting LifeFlight helicopter.
She was transported to HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital, where she was immediately taken in for life-saving surgery. Police said she remains in serious but stable condition and is recovering from her injuries.
Police said Sledge fled the scene on foot with a firearm but was later arrested several blocks away. He was charged with one count of attempted premeditated murder after it was discovered he had created prior plans to kill the victim, police said. Sledge was taken to the county jail without further incident.
According to jail records, Sledge was also charged with aggravated battery, tampering with or destroying evidence, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and kidnapping. Sledge, whose address is listed as 898 McClelland St., was jailed without bond.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement Crime Scene Division helped process the crime scene at the residence on Lakeview Drive, which is north of U.S. Highway 90 and west of North Pearl Street.
