An Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputy narrowly avoided a head-on collision Saturday night with a driver who was traveling in the wrong lane and without his headlights on.
Singletary
The driver, 27-year-old Michael Singletary, of DeFuniak Springs, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Calhoun Avenue in Destin around 11 p.m. and almost hit a marked OCSO patrol vehicle. The deputy was able to dodge the collision and immediately attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle due to Singletary exhibiting several indicators of driving while intoxicated, S.O. officials said in a news release.
“Singletary fled from the traffic stop, however, additional units in the area responded and Singletary realized he would not be able to get away,” S.O. officials said. “Singletary then refused orders to exit the vehicle, so deputies removed him from the vehicle. Deputies discovered an empty bottle of whiskey and over an ounce of marijuana in Singletary’s vehicle.”

Singletary was found to not have a valid license due to several previous arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, DUI, fleeing and eluding, resisting an officer without violence, and driving with a suspended license-second offense.
