IRS extends tax deadline for residents impacted by Hurricane Isaias

| Staff Reporters

Residents and businesses in Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties have had their IRS tax deadlines pushed back until February due to Hurricane Isaias.

Due to the effects of Hurricane Isaias, the IRS has extended the tax deadline for Santa Rosa and Okaloosa County residents.

Announced by the IRS Oct. 14, due to a disaster declaration issued by FEMA, individuals and households that reside in or have a business in most counties that make up Northwest Florida can now file their taxes by Feb. 8, 2027.

The postponement applies to filing and payment deadlines that fall on or after Oct. 9 and before Feb. 8, according to the IRS.

This includes those who had a valid extension to file their 2025 income tax returns, which were due Oct. 15. Tax payments on those returns were due April 15 and were not eligible for the relief.

Businesses also get more time on quarterly payroll and excise tax returns, which were due Nov. 2 and Feb. 1, and are now due Feb. 8. Penalties on deposits due from Oct. 9 through Oct. 25 will be waived if the deposits are made by Oct. 26.

The IRS said in its release that it automatically identifies taxpayers in the disaster area and applies the extension. Taxpayers who receive a late-filing or late-payment penalty notice in the extension window can call the number on the notice to have it removed.
