Disaster resource center opens in Crestview; councilman urges residents to ask for help

For residents trying to figure out where to turn after Hurricane Isaias, Councilman Sylvester Echols is encouraging them to visit the Crestview Community Center.

“I think that at a time like this, it’s important to know that you are not alone. There’s help that you can find.”

A Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC) opened at the center Wednesday and offers a place for people to ask questions, get help with important paperwork and meet with other agencies helping with storm recovery.

The center is located at 1446 Commerce Drive and will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Oct. 24.

Individuals and families can seek assistance, as can businesses and nonprofit organizations with storm-related damage.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management is working closely with Okaloosa County emergency officials to operate the centers. Staff from state agencies and nonprofit organizations can help people find resources for food, water, housing, financial assistance and cleanup. Volunteer help, tarps and services to remove mud and debris from homes may also be available.

Visitors should bring identification, proof of residence, insurance information and documents related to storm damage and losses.

Among the organizations that are expected to be on hand are the Northwest Florida Health Network, the Center for Independent Living, Legal Services of North Florida, BRACE and 211 Northwest Florida. Several other agencies include the Agency for Persons with Disabilities as well as the departments of Children and Families, Commerce, and Elder Affairs.

Echols also asks that residents check on neighbors they may not have seen since the hurricane and tell them about the center. Someone who needs help may not know where to look, and he says that information is available on the city of Crestview’s Facebook page.

The Precinct 2 councilman said most of the comments he has heard from constituents have been positive toward the city and its response to the storm. He gives credit to City Manager Jessica Leavins, public works employees and other city staff for planning ahead.

“We give all the credit to our public works and our city manager and our staff for the effort that they have put forth in getting things ready before this incident happened.”

His message to residents who are still facing recovery work is for them to ask for help.

“We are here for you in this time of need because each one of you is important to our city.”

A second resource center is open at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Convention Center, 1250 Miracle Strip Parkway SE in Fort Walton Beach. Officials say that center will also be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Oct. 24.
