Laurel Hill celebrated Christmas with a parade on Saturday. Police and fire trucks led the way down Fourth Street with sirens blaring. Other participants included the Laurel Hill cheerleaders, horseback riders and antique fire trucks.  In addition to participants who provided attendees candy, Santa Claus, made an appearance.

CRESTVIEW — Crestview Elks Lodge 2624 has donated $1,600 to help a local assisted living facility repair its walk-in freezer.

"It will not complete the repairs, but it will help us meet our goal. It was so wonderful for the Elks to help us," Crestview Manor Director Becky Brice-Nash said. The repair will cost about $10,000.

"I deliver food here every Monday for (Crosspoint Methodist of Crestview)," the lodge's Exalted Ruler, Bob Daniel, said. "And in discussion with the folks back in the kitchen, I found out that their freezer was broken, so what better way to help in the community than to provide a $1,500 (donation) — which we added a hundred bucks to make it $1,600, so they can cover the cost of fixing the freezer.

"So when we bring food and bread, etc., they can freeze it and then use it at a later date, as opposed to just bringing the stuff into the walk-in cooler and having to use it or throw it away when it goes bad."

The funding comes from the $1,500 Lodge 2624 members raised from donations and several grant applications they completed. It took them over two months to raise the money, which also honors the 150th anniversary of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks.

The freezer and a second walk-in at the facility will also enable the facility to store fresh food, including weekly bread donations from local Publix stores.

"Publix has actually started donating day-old bread products, and we have not been able to freeze them. At the new Publix we'll be able to go every Thursday and pick up fresh bread, and when we get that freezer repaired, we can allow for more freshly made meals to be accepted and stored," Brice-Nash said.

Crestview Manor is a nonprofit facility, purportedly one of just two area facilities that accept people with Medicaid. The other is Twin Cities Pavilion in Niceville.

"We just really appreciate things like this (as a nonprofit)," the manor's resident care coordinator, Keely McNeal, said. "We get donations here to fix things, to buy new products for residents, so we are just super-excited and super-thankful."

Brice-Nash said Crestview Manor gets a lot of assistance from local groups like Hub City Barbecue, Pic-N-Sav, Panera Bread, all the churches and others.

"We get so much help, but when we're looking at a large monetary donation, that's the largest problem," she said.

As for the freezer?

"With all the people we have in the community, we're going to get it repaired very soon," she said.

CRESTVIEW — Local youths ages 16-24 looking for employment or job training who meet certain criteria may sign up for the Career Pathway to Success, a CareerSource Okaloosa Walton program.

There is no scheduled start date; participants can enroll in the program at any time. After eligibility is determined, they are assigned a Career Counselor to work with them through the Career Pathway process.

One of the first steps is to complete their GED, and then participants attend Work Readiness workshops where they tackle subjects such as budgeting, applying for jobs, creating a resume and more, according to Anne Shaffield, a CareerSource Business Services representative and DeFuniak Springs site coordinator.

"As part of the program they have the opportunity to participate in a work experience, a three-week opportunity," Shaffield said.

Employers associated with the program train participants on the job.

"(They) work with this employer to give them an idea of what is expected from them in the workforce; being on time, dressing appropriately, getting along with coworkers, general work experience … It also gives them something to put on their resume," Shaffield said.

Eligible candidates must meet the age requirement and have one of these additional requirements apply:

•Not attending high school or they are a high school dropout

•In ABE/GED prep classes

•Homeless, a runaway, or in foster care

•Pregnant or a parent

•An individual with a disability

•Living in an out-of-home placement

•An offender

Program participants receive Adult Basic Education and GED program classes and earn work-readiness incentives. They learn about job applications, how to create a resume, interviewing skills, employability skills and money management, and the opportunity to complete up to eight weeks of work experience.

Winter is (just about) officially here — but you may soon be leaving it behind if you’re a snowbird. When you go, though, you’ll want to keep your financial situation from getting caught out in the cold.

These are a few suggestions you may want to consider:

•Protect your home. If you’re like many people, your home is your biggest investment, so you’ll want to protect it while you’re away. You’re probably already familiar with the steps you should take, such as informing your neighbors that you’ll be gone, stopping your newspapers, forwarding your mail, using a timer to turn lights on and off, and so on. And these days, with smart phones and advanced security systems, you can look in on your home whenever you like.

•Notify your bank. Recognizing the prevalence of identity theft, the fraud departments of many banks are getting more aggressive in spotting and denying unusual charges. Consequently, you’ll want to give your bank your temporary address and contact information before you leave. By doing so, you can reduce the risk of your account being frozen temporarily if your financial institution can’t reach you with questions about charges from an unexpected location. You might also find it useful to open a bank account at your snowbird site.

•Gather your tax forms. If you’re gone most of the winter, you may bump up against the tax-filing deadline, which, in 2018, is April 17. So, to allow yourself enough time to prepare your taxes, or to have them prepared by a professional, gather your tax information before you leave. Make sure you’ve got all your investment-related forms, such as your 1099-INT (for interest income) and your 1099-DIV (for taxable capital gains and dividends).

•Track your investments. You can probably track the progress of your investments online, and it’s a good idea to do so, just as you would at your permanent residence. Even if you’re only gone a couple of months, you may need to make some investment moves, such as “maxing out” on your IRA, so stay on top of your accounts and contact your investment professional, as needed. As always, though, don’t overreact to sudden market swings — ideally, you’ve got long-term strategies in place that can serve your needs in most investment environments. In any case, it also wouldn’t hurt to notify your financial professional that you’ll be away for a while, even if you typically only see him or her a couple of times a year.

•Arrange for bill payments. If you handle most of your bills online or through auto-pay, you won’t have to worry about missing a payment while you’re gone. Still, if you take care of some bills the old-fashioned way, with checks, envelopes and stamps, you may want to give yourself some sort of reminder of when these payments are due.

•Be careful on social media. To be on the safe side, you may not want to trumpet your extended time away from home on Facebook or other social media platforms. It’s sad but true that identity thieves watch for information like this.

In all likelihood, you’ll enjoy being a snowbird — and by making the above moves, you’ll have less financial baggage to deal with when you take off.

Interstate 10 resurfacing from east of County Road 189 (Holt/ Exit 45) to west of Yellow River — Drivers can expect intermittent eastbound and westbound closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., through Thursday, Dec. 7 as crews perform construction activities.

State Road 85 (South Ferdon Boulevard) turn-lane construction just south of I-10 at the Waffle House — Southbound traffic will encounter intermittent lane restriction from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4 through Thursday, Dec. 7 as crews construct a southbound, right-turn lane at the existing driveway to Waffle House. 

WALTON COUNTY

U.S. 98 widening from Emerald Bay Drive to Tang-O-Mar Drive — Motorists can expect alternating east and westbound lane closures from the Okaloosa/Walton County line to Tang-O-Mar Drive from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. through Thursday, Dec. 7 as roadway widening and drainage upgrades continue.

All activities are weather dependent and may be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.
