Lady Bulldogs maul Tate

Four Lady Bulldogs found the end zone for a touchdown. Crestview also had four interceptions in a strong showing on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

The first quarter was scoreless, but the rest of the game was all Crestview.

Kennedy Baluran scored the first touchdown of the game with 10 minutes left in the second quarter.

Baluran then had the first of her two interceptions with 5:09 left in the second quarter. The interception set up a touchdown pass from Kaitlyn Kemp to Kenzie Sheffield with 3:25 left in the half.

The Lady Aggies were driving late in the half before Taylor Gaston intercepted a pass with 34 seconds before the break.

Baluran had her second interception of the night with a little more than four minutes left in the third quarter. Once again Crestview cashed in on the Tate turnover with Kemp hitting Mjay Johnson with a touchdown pass to make the score 18-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

Sheffield intercepted a pass and took it deep into Tate territory a minute into the fourth quarter. Kemp ran in for the touchdown on the next play to make the score 24-0. Crestview added the extra point on a pass from Kemp to Baluran to close out the scoring on the night.

Lady Bulldog coach Damon Welch had mixed emotions about the win.

“I’m glad that we won,” he said. “But I’m not glad because we still made too many little mistakes. We’ve got to clean up the little mistakes before we can be a true competitor (for the playoffs).

“If we play like this tomorrow (against Navarre), it’s going to be a much closer game. If we can clean up the little stuff, it should be a good game.”

Baluran leads Lady Bulldogs to win

“I was proud,” Baluran said. “It was rough a game. We lost to this team in overtime in their house.

“I feel like my team just came out and we wanted it enough tonight.”

Baluran scored the final three Lady Bulldog touchdowns, but it was freshman Taliana Matienzo that scored the first points of the game for Crestview. Matienzo caught a touchdown pass from Kaitlyn Kemp late in the second quarter. Adriana Robledo added the extra point.

The Lady Vikings scored their first touchdown midway through the third quarter. Before the end of the quarter Baluran had her first score on a pass from Kemp.

Crestview was driving early in the fourth quarter when the Lady Vikings intercepted a Kemp pass and took it the length of the field for a score. The extra point tied the game at 13-13.

The score by Fort Walton Beach opened the flood gates of scoring. Baluran scored the next two touchdowns to give the Lady Bulldogs a 25-13 lead. The first of the touchdowns came on an interception that she returned to the end zone.

Her final touchdown sealed the win putting Crestview up by 12 points.

The Lady Vikings scored a touchdown late in the game and added the extra point to close within five points of Crestview. One play later the Lady Bulldogs took a knee to seal the win.

Crestview coach Damon Welch said Baluran has been the leader of the team all season.

“She’s honestly been our best senior by far,” he said. “Tonight, Kennedy did shine with her pick six. I’m not saying it sealed the game, but it got it to that point.”

Lady Bulldogs aim for deep playoff run in flag football

The loss was the first of the season for Crestview that opened the preseason in Jacksonville with a 25-12 win over Mandarin and a 12-0 win over Keystone Heights.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the season with road wins of 63-0 over Pensacola High on Tuesday and 39-0 over Pine Forest on Thursday.

Crestview coach Damon Welch, who is now in his fourth season as the head coach, knew Pace would be tough when making out the 2024 schedule.

“Whenever you’re making your schedule, you try and plan accordingly,” he said. “We want to play good teams because we don’t want to get to the playoffs and see good teams and not know how to play them. Pace is a great game, it’s a great rivalry.

“It’s kind of like us playing Choctaw, it’s always going to be a great game. We’re going to expect more of the girls.”

Welch will look to the seniors on the team to supply leadership.

Kennedy Baluran, Kemp, Adriana Robledo, Destiny Baldwin and Harley Hall are some of the key seniors on the team.

Baluran plays running back and cornerback, Kemp is the quarterback, Robledo plays receiver, Baldwin is in the slot and Hall is the center.

Zeda Banks and Akivia Coward are seniors that will rotate at various positions as needed.

“The strength of the team is going to be team morale,” Welch said. “If the girls can stay together and they can play to their ability and uplift everybody to their potential will be a team to reckon with. Flag football has a lot more Xs and Os than the game the boys play.

“It comes down to you got to find what’s working and pinpoint the weaknesses of the other team.”

Welch is looking for the Lady Bulldogs to make a deeper run in the postseason than they did a year ago.

“Last year we kind of fell short,” he said “Quite honestly, we made the regional playoffs, and I would love to make the regionals again even be district champ. But I would like to make a deep playoff run.”
