The Sheriff’s Office responded along with firefighters to the fire at 8185 Creston Barrow Road, S.O. officials said today in a Facebook post.

“Tragically, one of the senior residents was not able to escape the blaze,” S.O. officials said. “Another survived and was taken to North Okaloosa Medical Center for treatment. The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fatal fire.”

“This fire investigation is open and ongoing and no additional details are available at this time,” Ryan Walker, spokesman for the fire marshal’s office, said this afternoon in an email.

The Blackman Fire District responded to the fire, which was reported to dispatch around 3:45 p.m. Sunday.

“Family members on scene reported one person had not evacuated and remained inside the structure,” Fire District officials said today in a news release. “Firefighters identified the location of the family member inside the home and tragically the resident was not able to escape the blaze. After all other occupants were accounted for, family members advised that several pets remained inside the structure as well. Firefighters were not able to rescue the two pets from the structure due to the home being fully engulfed in flames.”

Firefighters from Almarante, Baker, Munson and Wing helped provide mutual aid. Firefighters fought the blaze well into the evening hours, according to information from the Blackman Fire District.
