The county School Board on Nov. 10 unanimously approved Chatman’s appointment to the role. The appointment, which takes effect Jan. 13, was recommended by district Superintendent Marcus Chambers.

“A lifelong member of our district and graduate of Laurel Hill School, Steve brings a wealth of experience and dedication to education and community service,” district officials said in a social media post. “From his early career in law enforcement to his leadership roles in equity and education, Steve’s journey reflects his passion for fairness, opportunity, and lifelong learning.”

In response to questions from the News Bulletin, Hilary DeMers, the district’s digital media and communications specialist, said via email, “This is a promotion for Mr. Chatman, he was formerly an investigator for the district. Dr. Lee Hale, assistant superintendent of human resources, is retiring.

“Lindsay Maxey, who was the director, was named assistant superintendent of human resources in October. Mr. Chatman is filling Mrs. Maxey’s former role.”
