The designation was confirmed in a letter from Kathryn S. Hebda, Chancellor of the Florida College System, who noted that Florida is committed to being the most military-friendly state in the nation. The Collegiate Purple Star Campus Distinction, established by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis in June 2023, honors colleges that provide exceptional support systems for military-affiliated students.

In the award notification, Hebda stated that OTC met all statutory requirements for the designation, including:

  • A designated military liaison
  • A dedicated military webpage
  • A student-led transition program
  • Professional development for staff on military student issues
  • Priority registration for military students and families.

Based on meeting these criteria across all OTC sites, the college is officially recognized as a Collegiate Purple Star Campus for a period of three academic years.

“We are proud to share news of this distinction with the high percentage of military families already being served in our college, as well as those who will be transitioning to our community in the future,” OTC Director Jon Williams said today in a news release. “OTC provides high-quality, hands-on training to all students. However, those who have served our great country with such bravery and honor will always have priority here at OTC.”

Okaloosa County School District Superintendent Marcus Chambers said, “Okaloosa County is home to one of the largest military populations in the state, and supporting our military families is woven into the fabric of our school district. This designation is a testament to the outstanding work of Jon Williams and the entire OTC team. Their commitment ensures that military-connected students receive the guidance, resources, and respect they deserve as they pursue their education and career goals.”

OTC will be listed on the Florida DOE’s website as a Collegiate Purple Star Campus and will have access to an official digital badge for display.
