At about 8:50 p.m. on Aug. 22, Crestview Dispatch received a 911 call from the father of a 2-week-old infant.

The father reported that his son was not breathing and was foaming at the mouth, city officials said today in a news release. The father told dispatch that he was on his way to North Okaloosa Medical Center, and then updated dispatch upon reaching the intersection of State Road 85 and P.J. Adams Parkway.

Crestview Police Cpl. Kristy Peters “located the frantic father and observed that the infant’s lips were already blue, indicating he was not getting enough oxygen,” officials said. “Cpl. Peters promptly administered back blows, which dislodged the vomit the baby was choking on, allowing the infant to resume breathing. As EMS arrived, the infant’s color began to return to normal. The infant was then taken to North Okaloosa Medical Center and given a clean bill of health.”

Officials said Peters’ quick actions saved the infant’s life.

Peters “embodies the core values of the Crestview Police Department, and her outstanding presence on our team fills us with immense pride,” officials said.

In a statement, Peters said, “I chose to work for the Crestview Police Department for their apparent dedication to constant improvement; starting from the caliber of people they elect to hire. This dedication continues to be benchmarked in their training department, which provided me with additional skills and the confidence needed to perform my duties. This incident is a refreshing reminder of the positive outcomes seldomly reflected in today’s media. More importantly, I want this to be a reminder to the public of the importance of having these basic lifesaving skills as part of their repertoire.”
