Deputies are recognized for their heroism

In addition, Deputy Hunter Russ-Kruger was awarded the Certificate of Commendation for his actions in the apprehension of a dangerous burglary suspect near Crestview.
Downing responded to a burglary call involving multiple stolen valuables, S.O. officials said in a news release. Demonstrating initiative and sound investigative judgment, he canvassed the area and located a suspect matching the provided description.
During the field contact, the suspect attempted to flee and drew a firearm. With remarkable courage and composure, Downing engaged the suspect, bringing him to the ground.
In the ensuing struggle, the suspect attempted to disarm Downing. Despite a direct threat to his life, Downing displayed outstanding physical control and restraint, subduing the suspect until backup arrived.
Russ-Kruger, though off-duty and having completed his shift, heard the urgent radio call for assistance. Without hesitation, he returned to duty, responding swiftly to the scene. His rapid arrival was instrumental in securing the suspect and preventing further violence.
As a result of these deputies’ combined efforts, a dangerous fugitive — wanted for additional burglaries in Polk County — was apprehended, a suspected stolen firearm was recovered, and stolen property was returned.
The deputies’ actions reflect great credit upon themselves, the Sheriff’s Office, and the law enforcement profession. Their heroism, quick judgment, and steadfast commitment to public service exemplify the highest standards of duty and honor, S.O. officials said.
