At about 8 a.m. Friday, firefighters from Crestview Fire Station 3, located just north of Katie Manor, responded to reports of an activated fire alarm at the senior living facility.

“Upon arrival, Truck 3’s crew investigated and found a faint smell of smoke in the south hallway and evidence of an activated sprinkler head in one of the units,” city Fire Department officials said today in a Facebook post. “The crew forced entry into the room and were met with heavy black smoke and zero visibility. Truck 3 searched the unit, quickly located a victim and removed them from the fire apartment.”

City Fire Chief Tony Holland said the victim is a 76-year-old man. The man was taken by Okaloosa County EMS to North Okaloosa Medical Center and then transferred to USA Burn Center in Mobile, Alabama.

“The last we heard, he was still in critical condition,” Holland said.
