At 9 a.m. on Jan. 6 and Jan. 13, the Beach Safety Team will be holding tryouts for anyone who is interested in joining this lifesaving team. The team has a tradition of not only saving lives when needed, but keeping beach visitors educated about rip currents and other hazards, county officials said today in a news release.
Seasonal lifeguard positions have historically led to full-time positions for a career in leadership and team building.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Once trained, seasonal lifeguards will be paid $20 per hour.
During the 2024 season, more than 1.8 million people visited county beaches on Okaloosa Island, and county lifeguards responded to or provided educational/preventive support for:
39 rescues
73 lost child incidents
273 medically related calls
487 beach wheelchair deliveries
0 drownings (guarded and unguarded areas)
Over 850,000 educational/preventive contacts about high surf, rip currents, heat indices, hazardous marine life, and double red flags.
