Three things to know ahead of Crestview’s council meeting on June 8

| Collin Bestor

The Crestview City Council will consider multiple items at its Monday meeting, from a $143,000 imaginative playground near the city library to a data-sharing agreement between local law enforcement agencies and a rezoning request from HCA Destin-Fort Walton Medical Center.
Here is what you need to know

Records exchange between law enforcement

In an effort to improve law enforcement relations across Northwest Florida and speed up communication efforts, the Crestview City Council will vote to approve an agreement between the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office and the Crestview Police Department.

The agreement would allow both departments to share information regarding investigations between the two agencies using a system known as the Secure File Transfer Protocol that will expedite daily operations. According to the agenda item, both agencies use their own electronic database to store and log documents, such as offense reports.

Both departments will be bound by the FDLE’s Criminal Justice User Agreement and can only use the system for authorized criminal justice purposes. Both departments can end the agreement at any time with 30-day written notice.

The item bears no financial impact on either agency and is listed as part of the meeting’s consent agenda

Crestview weighs $143K “Tiny Town” playground

The Crestview City Council is set to consider a $143,019 proposal to build a miniature town-themed playground near the library, funded from proceeds from the sale of Adams Sanitation.

The project would feature ten custom playhouses designed to resemble a fire station, police station, diner, bank, schoolhouse, coffee shop, market, animal hospital, service station and doctors’ office. In meeting documents, city staff say the concept is modeled off a similar park that is found in Sunrise, Florida.

Because staff say that no comparable vendor can be found, the council is being asked to waive the city’s competitive purchasing policy. The proposal includes shipping and installation with a production time of up to six months.

Funding will come from a $500,000 recreation fund established after Adams Sanitation changed ownership.

HCA Destin-Fort Walton requests zoning changes

Fort Walton Beach Medical Center is asking the Crestview City Council to rezone a 30-acre parcel owned by them located off Antioch Road.

The property, which currently has a future land use designation of both Commercial and Residential with designations for Commercial High-Intensity District and Single-Family Medium Density Dwelling, is being asked to get a change to Commercial future use for the portion of property that has a land use of Residential.

The request was approved at the Crestview Planning and Development Board on June 1. If approved on Monday night, the ordinance will return to the board at a later date for a second reading and final approval.

The Crestview News Bulletin reached out to HCA Destin-Fort Walton for more information but did not hear back.
